CCN and Microsoft Launch Blockchain for Air Cargo
CCN and Microsoft Launch Blockchain for Air Cargo
Cargo Community Network partners with Microsoft
to launch the world’s first blockchain air cargo billing, costing and reconciliation system
- Long wait for post-shipment billing, up to three weeks after the air cargo flight has departed;
- Laborious process to check the complicated freight rating rules to be applied for every shipment; and
- Tedious reconciliation by airlines and freight forwarders as it involves shipments that happened weeks ago.
In addition, CCN’s partners had to engage with multiple parties to complete the air cargo billing process (Fig. 1). The entire process – from requesting for rates to billing and reconciliation – can take up to a few weeks.

Improved billing processes with greater accountability, visibility with blockchain on Azure
By using blockchain on Azure, stakeholders in the supply chain can now retrieve information from a single source in real-time, including shipment details from the flight manifest (FFM), freight status update (FSU) and airway bill (FWB) to facilitate downstream billing and costing processes. Airlines and freight forwarders can also update their shipments and compute charges in real-time through the built-in smart contract feature for upfront reconciliation.
This provides timely financial information to stakeholders while enabling greater agility in revenue recognition, decision-making, risk management and customer service.

“In the competitive air cargo industry where speed and efficiency are key differentiators, technology can play an important role to enable greater operational efficiency across the entire supply chain. By using a robust, blockchain on Azure hybrid cloud set-up with high availability, Cargo Community Network is well-positioned to help airlines and freight forwarders to be quicker and more efficient with their billing processes, which can translate into tangible value-add for the industry across the board,” said Kevin Wo, Managing Director at Microsoft Singapore.
“Delivering convenience and simplicity to our partners has always been at the core of what we do. With our blockchain-based air cargo billing, costing and reconciliation system rolling out to our broader user community starting today, we believe that this will bring added value to all our airline and freight forwarding partners, and strengthen our position as the leading provider of innovative solutions for the air cargo industry,” added Teow.

CCN holds training for agents in Hanoi for Vietnam Customs’ National Single Window Implementation
CCN holds training for agents in Hanoi for Vietnam Customs’ National Single Window Implementation
HAN – Vietnam Customs implemented the National Single Window end of 2017 and has informed all airlines to submit passenger and cargo information in advance for all inbound and outbound flights of Hanoi, for a start. Cargo information includes flight manifest and air waybill data, which has to be submitted before flight arrival and departure.
In conjunction with this implementation, CCN organized a seminar on CCNhub on 10 January 2018, for forwarders in Hanoi. CCNhub, our web-based community platform, is one avenue where shipment information like FWB and FHL can be submitted by freight forwarders to the airlines.
A full room of freight forwarders attending the training session at Movenpick Hotel
CCNhub is a community platform that is connected to multiple airlines. Besides being able to facilitate FWB and FHL data exchange, other features include online flight schedules, e-bookings, proactive shipment monitoring and local services to GHA and customs authorities. This platform also encourages global collaboration with online chats, e-document management and more.
Freight forwarders will be able to streamline their operational workflow via a single and secured sign-in, ensuring timely and accurate submission of shipment data that will reduce delay of cargo at destination or the occurrence of penalties. With VN NSW, it is even more critical for FWB and FHL to be submitted by forwarders for seamless and smooth cargo operations.
CCNhub is available for all Vietnam freight forwarders, including co-loaders/sub-agents.

First ever eAWB Express Kiosks Opens in PAGSS
First ever eAWB Express Kiosks Opens in PAGSS
Press Release
For Immediate Release: 23 October 2017
First ever eAWB Express Kiosks Opens in PAGSS
PHILIPPINES, 17 October 2017 – Philippine Airport Ground Support Solution (PAGGS Inc.),together with Cargo Community Network (CCN) and Cargo Data Exchange Center (CDEC) Inc.,launched the first ever eAWB Express Kiosk in the country. This is a joint project which aims to push forward IATA’s e-AWB initiative by enabling all forwarders to submit electronic air waybill(MAWB) and print neutral master air waybill right at the point of cargo lodging.
The kiosks, located at the Mezannine area of the PAGSS warehouse is a fully airconditioned area where PC and printer set-ups are made available for the processors of the brokers and forwarders to create, revise and print MAWB using CCNhub, CCN’s web-based community system. This platform enableforwarders to input, revise and submit electronic AWB, which is the first step towards complying to the eAWB requirements of the airlines.
For forwarders with their own system, the kiosks will enable them to amend right after the final weigh-in, so they won’t need to go back at their office to amend. After amendment, they can print the data in the NAWB paper and submit to the Customs right away, allowing for the faster processing of the shipment documents.
“We are very much honored to be the site of the first e-AWB express kiosks in the country. PAGSS has always been on the look-out for ways to help the industry improve its processes and embrace innovation and this project is definitely a way to achieve these goals.”, declares Janette Cordero, President and CEO of PAGSS.
“As the country progresses, the challenge of matching resources and infrastructure with the flourishing volume, is always a top concern. Going digital by leveraging on technology is the way going forward, to be more competitive and be ready for greater business.”, CCN CEO Teow Boon Ling notes.
With the eAWB express kiosks at PAGSS, all the forwarders, both big and small, can be enabled to send eAWB to all airlines, not just the ones using the warehouse. This will greatly bring time and cost savings to the forwarders.By submitting the eAWB through CCNhub, either through the kiosks or host-to-host connection to CCN, the forwarders will be able to comply with current and future eAWB requirements of all airlines and thus, we can ensure that vision of having a paperless environment for the airfreight industry will be a possibility.
